What Are You Doing Just Because You've Always Done It?

I don’t know about you, but I can be a creature of habit.
I sit in the same spot every morning and drink my coffee. I make my to-do list daily. Drive a familiar route. Order the same thing at my favorite restaurant. Reach for my phone when I’m bored. Watch the same movies and TV shows over and over (yes, my favorite binge watch is Gilmore Girls)
And sometimes I catch myself doing these things and think, Why?
It’s not that there’s anything wrong with them. I like my routines. They make life easier. They make life cozier. But I wonder how often I do things simply because I’ve always done them that way.
Do you ever do that too?
We can get so comfortable with what’s familiar that we don’t even think to question it. And I’m not talking about making some huge life change. I’m talking about something much smaller.
What if you took a different route home?
Sat in a different chair?
Took your coffee outside?
Binge watched a different TV show or movie?
Tried something you’ve always said wasn’t “your thing”?
Not because you need to change.
Just because you can. You have a choice.
I’ve been experimenting with this lately, and what I’m discovering is that doing something differently makes me notice.
I notice my surroundings.
I notice my reactions.
I notice how quickly I fall back into what feels comfortable.
And sometimes, I notice that I have more choices than I realized.
Maybe that’s the real gift of stepping outside our comfort zone.
Not the different route or the new experience itself, but the opportunity to wake up a little.
To become curious.
To have a beginner’s mind.
To remember that we don’t have to do everything the way we’ve always done it.
So here’s something I’m asking myself this week and maybe you can ask yourself the same:
Where in my life have I stopped noticing because something has become familiar?
And then…
What would happen if I did just one small thing differently?
Nothing dramatic.
Just different.
You might be surprised by what you notice.
Remember to be the light,
Camille ✨
